Hometown: Boca Raton, FL

Book Title: Freddie The Fruit Fly

Genre: Children’s

Dorrance Publishing (DP): Describe your book in 10 words or less.

Zane Stuart (ZS): Optimistic, adventurous fruit fly finds his way in the world.

DP: What made you want to write your book?

ZS: I saw fruit flies in the market, which caused me to recall seeing them occasionally in my kitchen. I started thinking about how a fruit fly might get from the market to someone’s kitchen, and the story took off from there.

DP: How long did it take you to write your book?

ZS: All in all, it took many years. I wrote the first part of the book pretty quickly. Not knowing how to pursue publishing, the manuscript sat for a long time. Inspiration hit again, and I came up with more ideas about how Freddie’s journey would continue, and I added to the story. I pitched it to literary agents and got good feedback, but none of them decided to go with the book. Years later, I saw an ad for Dorrance on my computer. I sent them the manuscript and they accepted it! I found a great illustrator, and with Dorrance’s help, we finished the book to my great satisfaction.

DP: How do you choose the names of your characters?

ZS: In this case, I went with sound keeping with F for fruit fly. Freddie was an easy choice. And his girlfriend’s name is Francine. Also, my father’s name was Fred.

DP: What do you do when you have writer’s block?

ZS: Step away, get some fresh air, and come back to it. Be kind to yourself. The inspiration will return.

DP: What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

ZS: I love the transitions—Freddie really travels. I have great fun coming up with creative ways to get him from one place to another.

DP: If you were stuck on an island and had to have one person from each category with you, who would they be and why:

a. One character from your book:

ZS: The lady, because she’s the only human who is relevant to the story.

b. One fictional character:

ZS: Freddie! Because he’s so positive.

c. One famous person (living or dead):

ZS: I would choose George Carlin.

DP: Besides writing, what are your other interests?

ZS: Music, jamming with others, playing and teaching blues harmonica, practicing Qi Gong.

DP: Do you keep a journal?

ZS: Not currently, but that’s a great reminder! I used to write Morning Pages, inspired by Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist’s Way.

DP: How did you celebrate the publishing of your book?

ZS: Dinner with girlfriend and friends, but I’m always celebrating this achievement.

DP: If your book was made into a movie, who would play the main characters?

ZS: The main characters would be played by Tom Hanks and Drew Barrymore.

DP: What did you enjoy most about working with Dorrance Publishing?

ZS: I enjoyed their kind, knowledgeable, and expert assistance.

DP: Five favorite books of all time?

ZS: Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda; The Tracker by Tom Brown Jr.; Mousekin’s Golden House by Edna Miller; Black Elk Speaks by John Gneisenau Neihardt; The Horse’s Mouth by Joyce Cary

DP: One sentence of advice for other writers:

ZS: If you are entertained by your ideas, others will be too!

December 13th is my birthday and I celebrated by hosting a birthday party and book launch on December 14th, 2019.
Hometown: Dexter, NY

Book Title: Written in the Stars

Genre: Fictional Romance

Dorrance Publishing (DP): Describe your book in 10 words or less.

Lorie O’Brien (LO): A story about love and loss.

DP: What made you want to write your book?

LO: I have always dreamed of being a writer. As I got older, I would come up with characters and ideas and write things in a journal. In September 2018, a dear friend of mine passed away unexpectedly at the age of 47. His passing made me realize how short life was and that I needed to make my dream come true.

DP: How long did it take you to write your book?

LO: It took about six months to write the book. If I had been able to write full-time I would’ve been able to finish it sooner.

DP: How do you choose the names of your characters?

LO: A few of the names of the characters in Written in the Stars are actually the names of several people I went to high school with.

DP: What do you do when you have writer’s block?

LO: I am an avid runner. I love it because it helps me to leave everything behind and clear my mind. It’s great for writer’s block. I’ve gotten some of my best ideas worked out while running.

DP: What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

I think my favorite part was Part 2 with some of the twists that were thrown into the story. The ending was fun to write as well.

DP: If you were stuck on an island and had to have one person from each category with you, who would they be and why:

a. One character from your book:

LO: I would definitely pick Mac. Although he wasn’t one of the main characters from the book, to me he was the sweetest and most caring of them all.

b. One fictional character:

LO: Honestly, probably Marley from Marley and Me because I love dogs more than people!

c. One famous person (living or dead):

LO: I would probably want to spend my time on an island with Matthew McConaughey because I love the sound of his voice and his accent.

DP: Besides writing, what are your other interests?

LO: I’m an avid runner, and I just ran my first half marathon in September 2019.

DP: Do you keep a journal?

LO: Sometimes I do, but mostly I’m so busy on the road with my job that I just send myself voice emails throughout the day when I have things I need to remember.

DP: How did you celebrate the publishing of your book?

LO: My husband and I went out to dinner with our two daughters.

DP: If your book was made into a movie, who would play the main characters?

Mac… Adam Gregory
Lindsey… Analeigh Tipton
Dylan… Luke Benward
Michael… James Maslow
Melissa… Eleanor Tomlinson

DP: What did you enjoy most about working with Dorrance Publishing?

LO: Dorrance gave me the freedom to pretty much make the book what I wanted it to be without much tweaking on their end.

DP: Five favorite books of all time?

1. Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Piccoult
2. The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
3. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
4. Every Fifteen Minutes by Lisa Scottoline
5. The Pact by Jodi Piccoult

DP: One sentence of advice for other writers:

The best advice I could give is to be patient and let the story come at its own pace, don’t force it.

Dorrance Publishing (DP): Describe your book in 10 words or less.

Chuck Shields (CS): Stories in Disney culture, leadership, and transferable best practices.

DP: What made you want to write your book?

CS: My wife and daughter, who work with me in my consulting practice, urged me to take time out to share my Disney stories and experiences. I wanted organizations to understand how many of the best practices and cultural interventions designed at Disney can be successfully integrated into other organizations. My challenge at ManorCare/Choice Hotels Intl. was to see if we could use several of the best practices in an entirely different industry. It worked and we set new standards for the healthcare industry for Talent Management.

DP: How long did it take you to write your book?

CS: Eight months. Included fun stories, best practices, lessons learned, and Disney trivia.

DP: How do you choose the names of your characters?

CS: Used actual people and experiences.

DP: What do you do when you have writer’s block?

CS: I avoided writer’s block for the most part by spending considerable time upfront in developing a sequential outline. Occasionally had to stop and review where I was on the outline and create bullet points on the issues I wished to address.

DP: What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

CS: A toss-up between discussing my time leading the Disney University, which was described to me by the President of our Theme Parks worldwide as the “Keeper of the Keys of our culture” and my years at Imagineering helping recruit the creative design staff, the engineering team, project management team and prototype manufacturing group that designed, engineered, and built EPCOT Center and our first overseas version of Disneyland in Tokyo, Japan.

DP: If you were stuck on an island and had to have one person from each category with you, who would they be and why:

a. One character from your book:

CS: Van France, the first Manager of the Disney University. He and I developed a wonderful relationship during my Disney Days.

b. One fictional character:

CS: None.

c. One famous person (living or dead):

CS: George Bush Sr.

DP: Besides writing, what are your other interests?

CS: Still consulting with some very interesting organizations. Golf and my 7 grandchildren.

DP: Do you keep a journal?

CS: No, but I should.

DP: How did you celebrate the publishing of your book?

CS: Sent copies to my family and close friends.

DP: If your book was made into a movie, who would play the main characters?

CS: Not sure it would work as a movie.

DP: What did you enjoy most about working with Dorrance Publishing?

CS: There interest in marketing the book.

DP: Five favorite books of all time?

CS: 1. The Host 2. Clive Cussler books 3. The Da Vinci Code 4. Jack Reacher

DP: One sentence of advice for other writers:

CS: It’s hard work, but a great feeling of accomplishment when completed.

Name: Jennifer Shaw Cronin

Hometown: Medfield, MA

Book Title: Under the Hidden Moon

Genre: Adventure

Dorrance Publishing (DP): Describe your book in 10 words or less.

Jennifer Cronin (JC): A fun action/adventure story featuring strong, independent women.

DP: What made you want to write your book?

JC: I love to read and I had wanted to write a book for the past 15 years. I had a couple of false starts, but this time I persevered!

DP: How long did it take you to write your book?

JC: 11 months

DP: How do you choose the names of your characters?

JC: I have always loved the name Fiona and if I had had a boy, we would have named him Liam. The other names I just looked online at names and picked the ones I liked. For my villain, Abbott Nelson, I have no idea where that name came from it just pooped right out onto the page.

DP: What do you do when you have writer’s block?

JC: I usually do research or read instead of trying to force words.

DP: What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

JC: I enjoyed their trip to Alaska. Someday I would love to go to Alaska so I had fun reading travel books, looking at photographs online and doing the general research that went into writing about their trip.

DP: If you were stuck on an island and had to have one person from each category with you, who would they be and why:

a. One character from your book:

JC: Fiona, she is pretty tough and would keep things interesting.

b. One fictional character:

JC: Jamie Fraser from the Outlander series!

c. One famous person (living or dead):

JC: Robin Williams

DP: Besides writing, what are your other interests?

JC: I love CrossFit, hiking, reading, and cooking.

DP: Do you keep a journal?

JC: I do, and I write in it almost every day.

DP: How did you celebrate the publishing of your book?

JC: I haven’t really celebrated yet. I must admit I’ve been a bit anxious about the whole process. All of a sudden, I am putting my work out there for everyone to see and judge. I think I will celebrate after my book signing my first event!

DP: If your book was made into a movie, who would play the main characters?

JC: Maybe Amy Adams for Fiona and Chris Hemsworth for Liam.

DP: What did you enjoy most about working with Dorrance Publishing?

JC: Everyone has been so supportive each step of the way. It was always easy to ask a question and I never felt like my questions weren’t important.

DP: Five favorite books of all time?

JC: This is a tough one! There are so many books I love. I know the entire Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon is a real favorite. Dean Koontz’s Intensity for scaring me to death. Michael Crichton’s Timeline. I saw her speak the day her book was released and have a signed copy, Disappearing Earth by Julia Philips and Kristin Hannah’s The Great Alone.

DP: One sentence of advice for other writers:

JC: Make it a habit to write every day even if it’s only a couple of words.

Dorrance Publishing (DP): Describe your book in 10 words or less.

Logan R. Howard-Finn (LRHF): King Arthur and his knights battle to defend their homeland.

DP: What made you want to write your book?

LRHF: I am a huge fan of historical fiction and fantasy stories. I wanted to create a King Arthur story that was both rooted in historical accuracy, as well as blend it with the traditional Arthurian legend.

DP: How long did it take you to write your book?

LRHF: I began the rough copy of my book a decade ago. I wrote off and on during college. I rewrote it several times as I grew as a writer, and I learned the process of writing and how to hone your craft all the while. Once you have learned your process, the novel comes together far, far more quickly.

DP: How do you choose the names of your characters?

LRHF: Many of the names of my characters came directly from the Arthurian Canon. Arthur, Lancelot, Guinevere, are all easily recognized. The other names were either lifted from the pages of historical accounts, or from records from the era and local, such as the Saxon Kings; Hengist and Horsa. The others just sounded right when I put them on paper.

DP: What do you do when you have writer’s block?

LRHF: I avoid writer’s block by reading a good book or watching a good movie. Reading or watching a really well-done piece of storytelling almost always sparks my creativity.

DP: What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

LRHF: The climactic scene was probably my favorite to write. It is the final battle between Lancelot and Mordred. A close second was the epilogue. It gave me goosebumps when I read it.

DP: If you were stuck on an island and had to have one person from each category with you, who would they be and why:

a. One character from your book:

LRHF: If I were stuck on an island with a character from my book, I would definitely choose Sir Bors. He is a true friend, a fearsome warrior, and always made me laugh to write his lines. This is assuming, of course, that we are not tasked with repopulating the island, in which case, Princess Kaita, or the beautiful Morgause is a more suitable choice.

b. One fictional character: I would most enjoy hanging out with Gimli from the Lord of the Rings.

c. One famous person (living or dead): I will always want to talk baseball with Colorado Rockies royalty Todd Helton.

DP: Besides writing, what are your other interests?

LRHF: I have a degree in Health and Exercise Science, so fitness and nutrition is a passion of mine. I may combine the two passions, writing and fitness, and pen a fitness book someday. I am also an avid outdoors-man, and I love sports, namely, baseball and football.

DP: Do you keep a journal?

LRHF: I do not keep a journal, but I do have multiple writing projects at all times. I am very close to the completion of my second novel; Unwanted. I am also working on a children’s book I have high hopes for.

DP: How did you celebrate the publishing of your book?

LRHF: I celebrated the publishing of my book by holding a toast to: ‘Hard work and seeing a project through to the end.’ I was joined in my toast by my family, friends, and fiancee, Sarah. We then all prepared a dinner feast with plenty of red wine (as King Arthur would have done).

DP: If your book was made into a movie, who would play the main characters?

LRHF: If Caliburn was made into a movie, I think that I would cast Chris Hemsworth as Arthur, Russell Crowe as Merlin, Eva Green as Guinevere, Jeff Bridges as Ector, Scarlet Johansson as Morgause, Jude Law as Lancelot, and Adam Driver as Mordred.

DP: What did you enjoy most about working with Dorrance Publishing?

LRHF: I enjoyed how clear the communication was between the publishing team and myself. My questions were always answered quickly and completely. I was given the tools to understand the process of publishing a book in its entirety.

DP: Five favorite books of all time?

LRHF: My five favorite books of all time are: 1) Watership Down by Richard Adams, 2) Dune by Frank Herbert, 3) The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, 4) The Richard Sharpe Series by Bernard Cornwell, 5) Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.

DP: One sentence of advice for other writers:

LRHF: Read a lot, write a lot, and you will find inspiration.

Dorrance Publishing (DP): Describe your book in 10 words or less.

Sharon Daniels (SD): Little boy and the family dog are best companions.

DP: What made you want to write your book?

SD: When my grandson Evan was born, there was a family dog who was there first: a yellow lab named Snickers. There was great love from the very beginning, and it inspired me. I read him the book that I wrote years before about them, and he said, “Mimi, publish that book!”

DP: How long did it take you to write your book?

SD: I actually composed the book in poetic form–which was done rather quickly–as my inspiration often comes out in the form of rhyming poetry. I visualized what I wanted to see illustration-wise, and that took me several hours.

DP: How do you choose the names of your characters?

SD: The dog’s name is Snick, after the actual family dog, Snickers.

DP: What do you do when you have writer’s block?

SD: I write purely from inspiration, so I give it a break when I’m not feeling it.

DP: What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

SD: The book is written for a young child of preschool age or older, so it’s one story straight through and I enjoyed expressing the true daytime activities of the little boy and his first best friend. I also enjoyed adding a few photos of my grandson and Snickers at the end of the book to show the pair that inspired me. I added a question section for discussion at the very end of the book which children enjoy as they love to tell their own stories of their pets and it also evokes feelings of wanting a pet.

DP: If you were stuck on an island and had to have one person from each category with you, who would they be and why:

a. One character from your book:

SD: One character from your book: The little boy. He is full of fun and so smart!

b. One fictional character:

SD: Mary Richards from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. She was independent and well-loved.

c. One famous person (living or dead):

SD: Paul McCartney. I’m a huge Beatles fan and we could sing together!

DP: Besides writing, what are your other interests?

SD: I am a comic impressionist and singer. I perform in theaters. I write material for myself as well. I love reading and making up stories for children; they really enjoy it and request me to do so. I should mention that I have a degree in Child Development from the University of Cincinnati.

DP: Do you keep a journal?

SD: I wouldn’t say I keep a daily journal, but I have loads of notes and material in notebooks and papers. I am always coming up with new ideas that I must instantly jot down or I may forget! I am always writing material or poetry for any occasion.

DP: How did you celebrate the publishing of your book?

SD: I gave it to my grandchildren, who were overjoyed!

DP: If your book was made into a movie, who would play the main characters?

SD: The little boy would be shown at different stages, from three months up to the age of three or four. I would cast a youngish couple who could display parental love for a child and dog, plus some very modern type grandparents. The dog would preferably be a Yellow Labrador Retriever.

DP: What did you enjoy most about working with Dorrance Publishing?

SD: The politeness of my Project Coordinators who always called me back when I had questions. They were always willing to help.

DP: Five favorite books of all time?

SD: Dying To Be Me by Anita Moorjani, Me by Katharine Hepburn, One Last Time by John Edward, Call Me Anna by Patty Duke, and Enter Talking by Joan Rivers.

DP: One sentence of advice for other writers:

SD: If you’ve got a story to tell from the heart, start writing!
